Powers Returns!

Think Law & Order + Superheroes

At long last we have the return of one of my favorite comic series of all time.  Picking up where it left off we have the triumphant return of Powers.  This is what many consider as Brian Michael Bendis’ pride and joy.  Powers is basically a gritty cop drama/mystery with superheroes mixed in.  We follow the story of Detective Walker as he and his partner investigate crimes related to super powered individuals.  The main draw of this series is the atmosphere that surrounds each story.  There’s an element of curiosity as each chapter’s plot unfolds piece by piece as you try and figure out what’s going on in the case they are trying to solve.  Along with this is the ever present mystery surrounding Walker’s past and why he seems so well connected with some of the top name super heroes.

This new relaunch may be a little bit of a challenge to pick up to new readers simply because it does start where the comic left off last.  This series has a huge back-story and people may find themselves in a bit over their head without knowledge of the story thus far.  I highly recommend picking up Trade Paperback’s of this series though, and I guarantee that you won’t regret it.

For those of you who are familiar with the title, you will find all that you love back in action.  We have a re-launch of a new mystery as the body of another famous super is found in a hotel room.  The comic jumps back a little to show the connection between Diamond and this new hero, and I can expect that more will be unveiled as the story unfolds.  Walker’s partner this time is the internal affairs member who was assigned to watch Walker, and the tension couldn’t be higher.  Oeming’s unique and noir style is back in full force and has never looked more beautiful.  The minimalist approach to detail with a focus on shadows just fits the series so well.

I’m really just ecstatic to see this comic come back and it’s definitely on my must read list.
