The Gate Remake

Holy crap they are remaking The Gate.  This was a PG-13 horror film for kids from the 1980’s and was Stephen Dorf’s first film role.  Many don’t know this movie by name, but recognize it when they see it.  The story revolves around Glen and his sister Al being left home alone for three days while their parents are on vacation.  Before leaving, however, the family has an old rotten tree in their backyard dug up and underneath it they find a deep hole of sorts.  Glen believes it’s a portal to hell and he and his friends investigate in the manner of children which involves throwing things down the hole and other such experiments.  Unfortunately for them it turns out to actually be a portal to hell like Glen believed. They try and cover it up, but in the night tiny demons come into the world and start causing havoc.  There is a lot of silliness to the film, but the creatures designs and actions actually prove to be fairly scary.  The film is incredibly disturbing and actually gets pretty epic near the end including a scene with a giant demon who makes eyeballs grow on you wherever it touches you.  Probably one of the best things I remember about the movie is that the final battle is a one on one fight between the head demon and Glen without his friends or sister or anyone to help.  It’s rare that we get to see the hero of the film go it entirely alone.

Quiet Earth has brought us news that not only is their a 3D remake, but H.R. Giger (creature designer for Alien and Species) is on task to come up with some new creature designs for the film.  The remake will attempt to maintain the PG-13 sensibility of the original film, and hopefully will also maintain the feeling of a great battle between good and evil.  I’m just ecstatic here.  This was one of my favorite horror films as a child and still remains entertaining to this day.

For those who don’t recall, here is the trailer for the original The Gate (1987):
