New Berserk Anime Confirmed!

The jacket for the newest issue of the Berserk manga confirms that there is a new animation project in the works for Berserk.  This is awesome, as the original anime remains one of the finest examples of fantasy in anime.  The manga itself is perhaps one of the greatest examples of dark fantasy to ever be told in any format.  The manga started in the middle of the series and eventually did a large flashback arc to explain how things became so hellish in the current Berserk world as well as Gattsu’s backstory.  This flashback arc is what the anime covered which was fine, but it ended with such a massive cliffhanger that it left anyone who hadn’t known about the manga stunned.  Perhaps with this new project we’ll get to see more of what happens after and maybe it will encourage the author Kentaro Miura to keep working on his manga seeing as how he’s been taking a number of breaks lately.

Transformers “Prime” Characters Thoughts

September 28, 2010 2 comments

First, I’m not a huge Transfan, I just saw these and felt compelled to comment on them.

Second, here they are if you haven’t seen them:

Transformers Prime Character and Robot Designs

Now let’s talk about them.

To start with, all things considered, I don’t absolutely hate the Robot form designs. Yes they look like Bayformers, but it looks like a decent compromise between the more traditional look and the Bayformers look. What really bothers me is the disparity between the Robot and Vehicle forms. The robot forms all look like high count polygonal models not unlike what we saw in the War for Cybertron game, however, Optimus, Bulkhead, and Ratchet vehicle forms all look unsettlingly different, like they’re from the Transformers: Animated show, instead of being from the show that their robot forms are from.

I don’t know how I feel about Arcee looking like Priss’ Hardsuit from Bubblegum Crisis. The resemblance isn’t uncanny, it’s pretty obvious. She even has the same highlights.

I don’t care if Megatron doesn’t turn into a Walther P38, or even a gun, but why can’t he turn into something real? It doesn’t make any sense for him to turn into a Space Jet or whatever. I mean, why would that be a good idea?

I really really like the new Soundwave. He’s never going to be a Boombox again, get over it. Now if only Perceptor would get onto a new Transformers show.

I just don’t care about the kids.

Plants Vs Zombies in WoW Cataclysm

It seems Blizzard has deemed fit to add another massive time sink into their time sink.  This will be a series of low level quests around 20, but it gives a lot of xp and so should remain profitable for a long time.

Leak Final Fantasy Versus TGS 2010

Some quick shots of Final Fantasy 13 Versus on some bad camera leaked out.
I will be honest as much as I hated Final Fantasy 13 this one I am keeping my eye out since I love Kingdom Hearts.

Also apparently Versus will have airships that you can control so it makes it like the ole Final Fantasy of the older systems when Square got rid of that staple in Final Fantasy series it drove me insane, glad to see it make a comeback.

Disgaea 4 Announced

Luckily, in spite of Nippon-Ichi Software’s poor fiscal year, we will be getting another Disgaea game.  It looks to have more of what we have grown to love from the massive strategy rpg titan.  I’m loving the new characters for this installment, but that’s to be expected from the series.  It looks like we’ll get to see more zany stacking tactics and a possibility of turning characters into weapons? I think I saw a Prinny getting turned into a type of bow at one point.  Looks like another great time sink for fans of the SRPG genre.

A Review of the Video Games Geeks and Gamer Girls : Guest Post

September 17, 2010 3 comments

Songwriters and producers Max Martin and Dr. Luke have cashed in hard off of one beat this year. The songwriters, responsible for chart smashes from Ace of Base’s “Beautiful Life” to the Backstreet Boys’ “I Want It That Way” to Kelly Clarkson’s “Since U Been Gone,” delivered two key hits this year, Ke$ha’s single “Tik Tok” and Katy Perry’s “California Gurls,” two songs written essentially in the same key, with the same structure, and strikingly similar melodies. Both hit number one on the Billboard Hot 100 and on a number of international charts, and as a consequence, they’re ripe for parodies like “Geek and Gamer Girls.”

The song takes Perry’s “California Gurls” and makes it, pretty unsubtly, about what this video’s creators assume geek culture is. This is done, like most things, through namedrops and floating images of products to obscure the singer’s breasts, as well as cameos by Seth Green, who replaces Snoop Dogg’s guest verse on the original, as well as by Stan Lee and Battlestar Galactica cast member Katee Sackoff.

However, its initial consumers seem to believe that they’re being lied to. Video host Break’s comments section rapidly degenerated into anger from both men and women who found the thing unrepresentative, sexist, or just every bit as irritating as “California Gurls” and its drunk cousins. One Break reader called the song “nine full bales of fake and lame.” Another simply said “Bad video. Terrible song,” but added “Totally saved by a rapping Seth Green and a Stan Lee cameo,” as if the guest appearances salvaged the material. Holly Green, a video games writer, wrote “We don’t need this sexist garbage. This is the kind of stuff that gets me (a video games writer) attacked viciously … for identifying my gender. It’s because many geek girls and gamer girls like to do this … using their so called hobby as another means to get men to line up and tell them how pretty they are. It’s kind of pathetic.”

Later comments are more forgiving, talking about how they enjoyed particular shout outs and how attractive the girls are. However, the discussion centers pretty clearly around the objectification of women, the fact that girls as portrayed here don’t actually look like people who play video games, and the perpetual, insufferable misogyny that defines large congregations of people who feel the need to post comments on sites like Break. If nothing else is interesting about “Geek and Gamer Girls,” it’s the fact that it and both the Katy Perry and Ke$ha songs that preceded it have elicited almost the exact same criticism and conversation.

Andrew Hall is a guest writer.
